SAN MARCOS, Texas - Mavs Fall to Texas State in Series Opener

May 20, 2010

SAN MARCOS, Texas - UT Arlington was shutout for just the second time this season, losing 10-0 against Texas State in a seven-inning run-rule during game-one of the Southland Conference series at Bobcat Baseball Stadium Thursday night in a 1 hour, 56 minute contest.

The Mavericks (26-28, 18-13 SLC) lost for the sixth time in seven games while Texas State (33-19, 22-9 SLC) improved to 20-4 at home this season.

Texas State had its first four batters reach base in the bottom of the first inning on three base hits and a walk. The top three batters in the Bobcats' order scored to give Texas State a 3-0 advantage after an inning of play.

That was all Bobcats' starting pitcher Carson Smith (9-3) needed as he went the distance pitching 7.0 innings with four strikeouts without issuing a walk while holding the Mavericks to a season-low four base hits.

UTA starting pitcher Jason Mitchell (6-5) surrendered nine runs on 13 base hits with two strikeouts and three walks allowed in 5.1 innings pitched in the loss.

UTA shortstop Jesse Payne singled up the middle to lead off the second inning which gave the Mavericks their first base runner. The Mavericks next base hit didn't come until the fifth inning when Cody Dyvig singled through the right side, but a batter later was forced out on an inning-ending double play.

The Bobcats grabbed a 4-0 lead scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth inning after designated hitter Jeff McVaney hit his first of two doubles on the day.

UT Arlington's best opportunity to plate a run in the game was in the sixth inning when right fielder Jake Pinchback singled through the left side to lead off the inning. Pinchback then advanced to third on a throwing error by Smith on a failed pick-off attempt to first base with nobody out.

Pinchback was stranded at third base as Nick Orr struck out, Jordan Vaughn popped out to first base in foul territory and Michael Choice struck out to end the inning.

Choice extended his reaching base safely streak to 66 games after reaching base in the fourth inning on his ninth hit by pitch of the season. Choice went 0-for-3 in the game.

Steffan Guest was the only other Maverick to collect a base hit as he singled through the left side in the seventh inning.

Texas State put the game out of reach scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on five base hits. The big blow came off the bat of first baseman Kyle Livingstone as he launched a three-run homer over the left-field wall with one out in the inning.

Livingstone led the Bobcats going 3-for-4 with five RBI. A total of six Texas State players finished with a multi-hit game.

UT Arlington and Texas State will continue their Southland Conference series on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Bobcat Baseball Stadium.
