ARLINGTON, Tex. - Bianca Sauls produced a do-everything performance, tallying six kills, nine digs, five assists and three blocks. She also set a new career-high with four aces, guiding the Mavericks to beat Prairie View A&M 3-0 Saturday.
Sauls made the decision before the season to go back to her jump serve, which is much stronger than her regular serve. That move paid dividends Saturday.
"I'm feeling much more confident this year with the jump serve," Sauls said. "We've really been focusing a lot on serving this week, which has helped everyone."
UT Arlington dominated the first set but the Panthers made a run in Game 2 before UTA ran off a string of nine consecutive points.
The Mavs went on to win 25-12, 25-22, 25-13 at Texas Hall for their second win in the UT Arlington Hilton Invitational.
UTA coach Diane Seymour was pleased to watch her team bounce back from a slight letdown early in the second set.
"You never want that drop in intensity, but that's going to happen right now, it seems, with this team until they become a little more confident and consistent in their play," Seymour said. "It was disappointing to see the drop-off, but the good sign and the learning part of it was we were able to pick up the intensity again in the third set. I think that's a growing sign for us."
Behind Raegan Daniel's distribution, four Mavericks finished the match with at least six kills. Daniel finished the match with 32 assists.
Tara Frantz and Emily Shearin paced the UTA attack with nine kills apiece. Amanda Aguilera produced seven more.
Jessica Jiles also earned her first two kills of the season in the win.
Seymour credited Daniel for the balanced Mavericks attack.
"It's something we've been talking a lot about - spreading the wealth," Seymour said. "We've been putting a lot of pressure on our outside hitters and they've been performing well some weekends and not well some weekends. One way for us to help them to get their confidence and get more consistent is to spread the ball around and then give them opportunities where they're not facing a double-block every time."
Libero Alicia Shaffer turned in another strong performance, posting 16 digs and leading a defensive effort that limited the Panthers to a .000 attack percentage.
The Mavs also set a season-high the match with eight aces.
Breanna McNeil led Prairie View A&M with 10 kills.
UT Arlington plays again tonight at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts North Texas at Texas Hall. Both teams won their first two matches in the UT Arlington Hilton Invitational.
