Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington men's tennis team opened their season against No. 49 TCU and dropped a 6-1 decision to the Horned Frogs.
"The men played really hard today," said head men's tennis coach Diego Benitez. " The score doesn't reflect how close it really was."
UTA started the day with doubles action where the Mavs suffered losses in the No. 1 and 2 positions. Lucas Leppin and Brieuc Hamon were the only Mavericks to record a win in doubles play. The duo recorded an 8-6 victory against Zack Nichols and Daniel Sanchez.
Mindaugas Celedinas and Yauheni Yakauleu suffered an 8-6 loss in the No. 1 doubles spot against #55 Emanuel Brighiu and Christopher Price.
In the No. 2 doubles spot, Nicolas Moreno and David Subirats fell 8-4 to Slah Mbarek and Soren Goritzka.
The Mavericks dropped five of the six singles flights. Celedinas recorded one of the biggest wins of his career against Brighiu in the No. 1 position. The junior notched a three-set decision by scores of 3-6, 6-3, and 6-3.
Soren Goritzka defeated Yakauleu, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot while Leppin dropped the No. 3 flight, 6-4, 7-5.
Christopher Price recorded a 7-6, 7-5 win against David Subirats in the No. 4 flight. Moreno suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Mbarek in the No. 5 singles spot while Arlington native Jason Lateko dropped a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Cameron Nash in the No. 6 flight.
The Mavericks return to the UTA Tennis Center for a double-header on February 11 against the University of Dallas and Cameron. Match times are set for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
