ARLINGTON, Tex. - Amanda Aguilera and Tara Frantz both recorded double-digit kills and helped UT Arlington sweep Lamar 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Texas Hall.
The Mavericks battled for wins in the first two sets before blowing out the Cardinals in the third set on their way to a 25-20, 25-22, 25-13 victory.
Behind Aguilera and Frantz, the Mavericks hit .577 in the third set while holding Lamar to a .094 attack percentage.
UT Arlington pulled away in the third set with an 8-0 run to claim a 15-7 lead and never looked back.
"I think we played very clean and hard in the third set," UT Arlington acting head coach Erin Clute said. "I think (Lamar) got a little bit frustrated and when that happens there is a tendency to play the same way, but we did a really good job of not changing our style of play. We went to the court in the third set and expected a dogfight. If you expect it and don't get it, it's all the better because at least you are in the mindset to fight hard."
Aguilera led the team with 14 kills. Frantz earned 11 kills while hitting .500. The Mavericks hit .297 in the match, marking their highest attack percentage in a conference match this season.
Charae Grosser also had six kills and three blocks.
Defensively, Alicia Shaffer's 16 digs led the way. Eld-hah Kaswatuka chipped in with a season-high nine digs. The Mavericks held the Cardinals (4-15, 2-2) to a .127 hitting percentage for the match.
Setter Amanda Welsh helped UT Arlington (7-11, 3-1) run a high-paced attack while dishing out 31 assists.
"We have some confidence now, for sure," Clute said. "It may only be two, but this is a win streak and it will feel good to get to go home, sleep in your own bed, take the day off and hit the ground running on Monday with two wins under your belt from the week before."
Megan McStravick and Sierra Whittaker led Lamar with eight kills each.
UT Arlington plays again Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when it hosts Texas State at Texas Hall.
