The UT Arlington men's basketball team opens its 2011-12 season Monday as they host East Texas Baptist.
This is the final season-opening game in Texas Hall for the Mavericks as they will move into the new 7,000-seat College Park Center later in the season. UTA has called Texas Hall home since 1965.
Fans can gain free admission by bringing three cans of canned goods to the front of Texas Hall. The Student-Athletes Advisory Committee will be set up in front of Texas Hall, running its canned food drive.
Head coach Scott Cross and his Mavericks will be looking to win their sixth-consecutive season opener as Cross, who is entering his sixth season as the head coach, has led the Mavs to a school-record five consecutive season-opening wins.
"We have had a good month of practice but we are ready to play someone else other than ourselves," Cross said. "We played well in our two scrimmages against Wichita State and SMU but it will be nice to play a real game in what is going to be the last opener in Texas Hall."
Texas Hall has been kind to the Mavs over the last few years as they are 43-13 at home since the start of the 2007-08 season.
The Mavs will be led by seniors LaMarcus Reed, who is the team's leading returning scorer (12.4 points per game) and Bo Ingram, who was named the Southland Conference's Newcomer of the Year after the conclusion of last year.
This game also marks the start of the final season of Southland Conference basketball for UTA. The Mavericks will be moving to their new home, the Western Athletic Conference, on July 1, 2012.
