Fayetteville, Arkansas - Bud Walton Arena
The UT Arlington women's basketball team suffered their first road loss of the season to Arkansas, 57-34 Wednesday afternoon at the Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Ark. The setback dropped the Mavericks to 0-3 on the season.
"Obliviously our youth showed on us when they turned the pressure on us," Morrow said. "I was real proud of the effort we gave especially in the first half but we just couldn't put the ball in the hole today."
The Mavericks struggled in the opening minutes of the first half with the Razorbacks full court press but with the help of freshman Chauntandra Williams the Mavericks settled into their offense and got rolling.
Williams brought the Mavericks back with consecutive buckets to tie the game at 8-8 at the 14:51 mark. The freshman guard tied the game for the second time (15-15) with a 3-pointer with 5:59 remaining in the first half.
UTA headed into the locker rooms down 25-19 and finished the half shooting 31 percent from the floor. Williams led all scorers at half with nine points.
In the second half, the Razorbacks took advantage of consecutive turnovers by the Mavericks to go ahead by 10 with 18:01 remaining in the game. UTA continued to struggle to find their offense and had trouble holding onto the ball against Arkansas's full court pressure.
The Mavericks committed four miscues early in the second half, giving the Razorbacks a 13 point advantage with 15:40 on the clock.
A layup by Sarah Watkins put the Razorbacks ahead by 17 with 8:16 remaining in the game. Williams connected on her second three of the game to bring the Mavericks within 13 at the 5:41 mark. That was as close as the Mavericks would get as turnovers continued to hurt them. UTA committed 20 total miscues which turned into 24 points for Arkansas.
Williams turned in a good performance for the Mavericks scoring a season high 14 points. The freshman from Lufkin, Texas went 5-of-9 from the floor, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc and 2-of-3 from the free throw line.
"I thought that Chunandra played really good and focused in the first half. She did some real good things offensively and defensively but wasn't as focused in the second half," Morrow said.
Junior Kiara Parker led the team with a career high 12 rebounds and finished with four points.
The Mavericks will remain on the road as they travel to Stillwater, OK for a 3 p.m. matchup against Big 12 opponent Oklahoma State on Sunday, November 20.
Sunday's game against the Cowgirls will be the 10th meeting between both schools... OSU leads the series 8-1... the last time both schools faced off was last season where the Cowgirls recorded an 82-52 win in Stillwater, OK... the Mavericks have a 1-4 record playing at Gallagher-Iba Arena... UT Arlington's only victory was in 2003 where the Mavs notched a 59-57 victory in Stillwater.
