Softball drops 3-1 decision to Cleveland State

Feb. 10, 2011

Final Stats

Corpus Christi, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team opened day one of the Best Western Marina Grand Invitational Tournament with a 3-1 loss to a tough Cleveland State team in Corpus Christi, Texas.

"It was good to finally play because we've been off the field so long but we were definitely rusty," said head coach Debbie Hedrick. "We look forward to our games on Friday, so we can make adjustments and improve in all areas of pitching, offense and defense."

As a team, the Mavericks scattered four hits. Freshman Stephanie Gonzalez connected on three of UTA's four hits. Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Fellow freshman Rachel Forshaw was the other Maverick to record a hit.

UTA's lone run came in the top of the first following a ground out to the shortstop by senior Rebecca Collom, which scored Gonzalez from third.

Despite three Viking errors, Cleveland State managed to record six hits. The Vikings plated solo runs in the first, second and fifth innings.

Sophomore pitcher Teri Lyles (0-1) got the start on the mound against the Vikings, pitching five complete innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out two.

Freshman hurler Callie Collins made her first collegiate appearance in the sixth inning. The Rusk, Texas native pitch one frame, allowing zero hits, two base-on-balls and striking out two.

The Vikings Tess Sito (1-0) recorded the win, pitching a complete game. Sito allowed one run on four hits while striking out 11.

The Mavericks continue tournament action Friday when they go head-to-head against Loyola-Chicago at 9 a.m. and end the day with a 3 p.m. match up against host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Against the Ramblers, UT Arlington owns a 2-0 all-time series lead. Both teams met each other in Corpus Christi, Texas in 2001 where the Mavericks rolled to a 4-0 victory.

The Mavericks are 11-9 all-time against the Islanders. UTA ended the Islanders run in last year's Southland Conference Tournament with a 3-2 loss.
