The UT Arlington women's basketball team gave it all they had in the second half against Stephen F. Austin but when the game came down to the final 20 seconds, the Mavs couldn't come up with the win, falling 68-67 Wednesday in Nacogdoches.
The loss dropped the Mavericks to 7-16 on the year and 4-7 in conference play.
UT Arlington started the half slow, falling behind 20-9 at the 10:26 mark. The Mavericks offensive struggles persisted as Stephen F. Austin rolled to a 32-18 advantage. With Tamara Simmons on the bench with foul trouble, Shalyn Martin did all she could to bring the Mavs back into the game. Martin carried the Mavs to within eight at 32-24 with 1:58 left but the Lady Jacks ended the half on an 8-0 run to lead 40-24.
Stephen F. Austin finished the half connecting on 7-of-12 from 3-point range, three of which came from Tammara Marion and the Lady Jacks recorded 11 points from the charity stripe.
UT Arlington regrouped during the break and opened the second half on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 42-31. The Mavericks continued to attack the Lady Jacks to come within six at 47-41 with 12:09 left to play.
Marion brought SFA back on top by 12 at the 10:10 mark but UT Arlington continued to battle to come within one at 65-64 following an amazing 3-pointer by Simmons with 1:33 remaining.
With 40 seconds left in regulation, Kiara Parker came up with a huge offensive rebound putting the Mavs ahead, 66-65.
Stephen F. Austin quickly called a timeout following the shot and set up the play for Marion. Marion connected on her fourth three of the game from the corner, giving SFA back their lead at 68-66 with 20 seconds.
Freshman Briana Walker gave the Mavericks one more chance to possibly tie the game and go into overtime with a pair of free throws but the Fort Worth native failed to connect on her second freebie. Walker finished the game with 19 points, tying her season high.
Simmons recorded 16 points while Martin added 15 and Jasmine Smith chipped in with 10.
The Lady Jacks connected on 33 points off of the Mavericks 26 turnovers. Seventeen of those turnovers came in the first half.
Marion led SFA with 19 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range and 3-of-4 from the free throw line.
UT Arlington finished the second half shooting a season best 58.6 percent and finished the game shooting 51.9 (27-of-52) percent.
The Mavericks return to Texas Hall this Saturday against SE Louisiana. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
