Final Stats
HOUSTON, Tex. - UT Arlington gave up five runs in the first inning and never caught Houston during the Cougars' 15-5 win Friday night at Cougar Field.
The Cougars (1-0) pounced on the Mavericks early in the season opener. They rattled off five consecutive one-out, first-inning hits to bounce starting pitcher Collin Reynolds from the game before he could retire another batter.
Preston Beck went 2 for 4 as one of the night's bright spots for the Mavericks. The sophomore wasted no time in extending his hitting streak to 21 games, doubling down the left-field line in the top of the first.
Brian Nephew also collected a pair of hits, including a double to right-center field to lead off the sixth. He later scored when Ryan Walker lofted a sacrifice fly to left field.
Houston starter Codey Morehouse held UTA to one run over 7.0 innings while scattering four hits. He also struck out six and didn't allow a Mavericks player to reach third base until Nephew in the sixth. When the Mavs did get runners on, they
Caleb Ramsey led the way offensively for the Cougars, going 2 for 5 with a double, triple, three runs scored and three RBI. Chase Jensen collected four hits while scoring two runs and driving in another. Austin Gracey added a 3-for-5 night with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.
The Cougars finished with 18 hits off four UTA pitchers.
Chad Comer knocked a double down the right-field line to lead off the eighth. He scored later in the inning when true freshman Greg McCall followed with another double into the right-field corner.
McCall and Walker both earned their first career RBI in the game.
Houston's Jake Runte hit the game's only home run - a two-run shot down the left-field line in the eighth.
The two teams renew their three-game set Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
