Arlington, Texas - After a great weekend of tennis, the UT Arlington women's tennis found themselves ranked No. 63 in the national rankings Tuesday.
"This is the result of a great first third of the season," said head coach Diego Benitez. "Our girls knew what it was going to take in order to break into the rankings, they fought and overcame very tough competition. We feel like we are in the spot we deserve to be in". The Mavericks are 3-2 on the season and recorded one of their biggest wins in recent years against No. 59 Wichita State on Saturday (Feb. 26) in Wichita, KS. UTA won the match 3-2 against the Shockers.
Junior Maria Martinez-Romero finished the week with a perfect 3-0 singles record and improved her overall mark to 5-0, earning her SLC Player of the Week honors.
"Maria continues to dominate against her opponent's day in and day out. "She is just a tremendous solid player that will not let anything get in her way. She knows what she is capable of doing and continues to execute her game with great finesse," said Benitez.
UT Arlington opens conference action at Central Arkansas on Saturday, March 5. Match time is set for 10 a.m. in Conway, Ark.
