ARLINGTON, Tex. - For a second straight game, a UTSA starting pitcher stymied UT Arlington's offense.
Saturday, however, there were no late-inning heroics for the Mavericks, who saw their five-game win streak come to an end in a 4-1 loss to the Roadrunners at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTSA starter Taylor Walton threw a complete game, holding UT Arlington to one unearned run on seven hits, picking up the win and evening the series at a game apiece.
"You have to give their guy a lot of credit," UTA coach Darin Thomas said. "He threw a complete game and had a good game plan. What's disappointing is we didn't make the adjustments we needed to make. We gave away some at-bats today. This was the worst offensive game we have had all season."
The Mavericks (11-8, 3-2) had a few chances to gain momentum - none better in the third inning. Philip Incaviglia and Ryan Walker led off the inning with a single and a walk, respectively. Jesse Payne advanced the runners to second and third with his groundout.
Walton then got a pop-up and a groundout to escape the threat.
UTA did not have a runner reach third base for the rest of the game.
UTSA took the lead in the fifth when R.J. Perucki singled home Jake Wood, who reached on an error to start the inning.
The Roadrunners scored two more in the sixth - one on Casey Selsor's RBI double and another on Wood's RBI single.
UTA starter Collin Reynolds lasted 6.0 innings and gave up all four runs, though just three were earned. He took the loss - his second of the season - giving up seven hits with a hit batsman and five strikeouts.
UT Arlington scored its run in the second when Jordan Vaughn advanced to third on Jake Pinchback's single. UTSA right fielder Tyler Carpenter misplayed the ball, allowing Vaughn to score.
The Roadrunners (7-14, 1-4) answered immediately the game in the third when Riley Good's RBI single plated Colby Braddock to tie the game at 1.
No Maverick had more than one hit, though seven starters did notch one.
"Hopefully we have a better mindset going into tomorrow," Thomas said. "These things are going to happen in baseball. We just have to bounce back and move on."
UT Arlington will try to take the rubber game of the series against UTSA on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
