THIBODAUX, La. - If UT Arlington is to win its fourth consecutive Southland Conference series this year, it will have to do so by winning its fourth consecutive Sunday game.
The Mavericks committed five errors and allowed four unearned runs to score in their 7-3 loss to Nicholls on Saturday at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels (12-15, 2-8) scored five times in the fifth, enabling them to even the series at a game apiece.
UTA starter Collin Reynolds lasted 5.0 innings. He gave up all seven runs, but only three were earned. Nicholls managed seven hits against him and Reynolds struck out six.
The Colonels also scored a pair of runs off Reynolds in the first.
Ryan Walker drove home the Mavericks' first run in the fifth when his RBI groundout to first scored Nick Orr. Walker added another RBI in the seventh when his single to left-center field scored Jordan Vaughn.
The Mavs had a chance to pull even closer in the seventh, but Nicholls pitcher Dylan Delaune struck out to UTA players to leave the bases loaded.
UT Arlington (15-12, 7-4) scored its other run in the sixth. Chad Comer's RBI groundout drove in Preston Beck, who led off the frame with his second triple of the season.
Brian Nephew went 0-for-4, ending his hit streak at 19 games. Nephew's 19-game hitting streak matched Walker for the team's longest of the season.
UTA and Nicholls settle their three-game series tomorrow with the rubber match set for 1 p.m.
