DALLAS, Tex. - Greg McCall went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI, helping UT Arlington top Dallas Baptist 6-4 Tuesday night at Patriot Field.
The Mavericks (16-13) compiled 13 hits in the victory, which completed their first season sweep of the Patriots since 1989. Eight of the nine UTA starters had hits in the game.
"It's amazing because we have struggled to score runs," UTA coach Darin Thomas said. "It's tough to score at Nicholls. We had a long weekend when we lost two of three and we needed a win in a big way. We had a couple chances to break it open, but I'm really proud of McCall and Preston Morrow and Jake Pincback who jumped in there and had pinch-starts. None of them played this weekend and we had seven hits out of them."
McCall, making his third career start behind the plate, blasted his first collegiate home run on DBU starter Jared Stafford's first pitch of the fourth inning. His shot bounced high off the scoreboard and gave the Mavs a 3-0 lead.
He added a couple insurance runs in the seventh when his two-out, two-run single drove in Preston Beck and Ryan Walker.
UTA used a pair of sacrifice flies to score twice in the second inning. Jordan Vaughn opened the scoring when his sacrifice fly scored Brian Nephew. Walker added to the lead two batters later when his flyout to the left-field warning track allowed McCall to score.
Mavericks starter Brody Walker and Kasey Merck combined to hold DBU to one run on four hits through the first 6.0 innings.
Brody Walker lasted 4.0 innings, giving up the one run on three hits. He walked one batter in earning his second win of the season.
Merck threw 2.0 scoreless innings in relief.
Tyler Robbins' fourth-inning home run snapped Brody Walker's 9.1-scoreless inning streak.
The Patriots rallied in the seventh and eighth, though, scoring three runs over the next 1.0-plus innings. Jason Krizan pulled the Patriots (17-11) to within two with a two-run homer to right-center field.
Michael Morales came on to retire the next three Patriots hitters, ending the eighth. He stayed in and recorded the first out in the ninth before Thomas turned to southpaw closer Adam Boydston to face back-to-back lefties.
Boydston got Duncan McAlpine to pop up and, after allowing a two-out single, got Austin Elkins to fly out to center, ending the game. Boydston earned the save, giving him five on the season.
Dallas Baptist had a chance to pull closer in the fourth. Jason Krizan and Ryan Bemanesh followed the homer with a walk and single, respectively, and moved to second and third on Joel Hutter's flyball to right field. However, Brody Walker got Landon Anderson to line out softly to first base. Shortstop Jesse Payne ended the threat when he made a nice backhanded play in the hole and threw out Kenny Hatcher.
Morrow went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Beck added two hits, including a double.
The Mavs return home Friday when they host Southeastern Louisiana for a three-game Southland Conference series. First pitch Friday is set for 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
