NACOGDOCHES, Tex. - Bryson Myles went 4-for-6 with four RBI, helping Stephen F. Austin overcome an eight-run deficit to beat UT Arlington 13-12 Sunday afternoon at Jaycees Field.
Michael Haynes broke a 12-12 tie with a sacrifice fly in the 10th, giving the Lumberjacks a walk-off win.
The 10-inning loss cost the Mavericks the series against Stephen F. Austin, who entered Sunday tied atop the Southland Conference standings.
It also marred an otherwise spectacular game from Ryan Walker, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored. Walker drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth when his single to right scored Nick Orr.
However, the Mavs could not hold the lead in the ninth.
With two outs, Myles stole second base. Garrett Smith followed with a single to left field. Orr's one-hop throw beat Myles, but the ball came loose on the collision at the plate, allowing Myles to score the tying run.
That set the stage for Haynes in the 10th.
Jason West picked up the win by throwing 1.2 innings, giving up the one run on Walker's hit.
The Mavs had a chance to get to West for more in the 10th, but he got out of a two-on, two-out jam with a strikeout.
The Lumberjacks (30-13, 17-7) started chipping away at the UTA lead with five runs in the sixth and tied it with three runs in the eighth. They tied the game when Jarid Scarafiotti tapped a bouncer and reached on a dropped throw.
UT Arlington (25-20, 13-11) jumped on the board in the second when Walker drove a two-out, bases-clearing double down the left-field line to score three. Michael Guerra followed with another double down the left-field line, bringing home Walker and making the score 4-0.
Chad Comer added to the lead in the third when he laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to score Brian Nephew.
SFA got on the board in the third when Garrett Smith reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Jordan Lewis.
The Mavs answered right back in the fourth when they tagged reliever Chase Wier for four runs. Guerra drove in the first run when his groundball scored Philip Incaviglia. Preston Beck added a sacrifice fly.
Jesse Payne finally knocked Wier out with a run-scoring single to right field. Comer greeted reliever Fabian Arcizo by bombing a run-scoring double into the left-center field gap, extending the lead to 10-1.
However, Stephen F. Austin made sure that run didn't hold.
UT Arlington concludes its eight-game roadtrip Tuesday when it travels to Louisiana Tech for a 6 p.m. game.
