Men finish third, women fifth at SLC Outdoor Championships

May 15, 2011

NATCHITOCHES, La. - The UT Arlington men finished third in the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships and the women placed fifth Sunday when the three-day meet concluded.

The men finished behind Stephen F. Austin, who won the meet, and UTSA.

Though the Mavericks did not win, they boasted several strong individual accomplishments.

Cordero Gray broke the UT Arlington and SLC Outdoor Championships records in winning the 100m with a time of 10.12. Later in the day he won the 200m with a time of 20.56.

The senior sprinter finished as the High Point Scorer on the men's side, accounting for 22 total points.

"We came up short in several areas and the championships slipped away," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "I'm very proud of our seniors. Cordero broke Elston Cawley's 100m record. It was a great meet for Cordero and for Romain Martin, who won the decathlon yesterday.

"The women were a little disappointing, but we competed well. Both relays ran well. I'm proud of our senior women. We will miss them."

Lindsey Putman won the 1500m for the women, recording a time of 4:35.37.

The men's 4x100m relay team finished second with a time of 40.73. The 4x400m relay team finished third.
