ARLINGTON, Tex. - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored three times in the first inning and never trailed in beating UT Arlington 8-4 Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Islanders went off for 15 hits and scored in four of the first five innings. Matt Holland led the way, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Eight different AMCC players had at least one hit and one run.
UT Arlington did its best to respond against Justin Meza, scoring three runs against him over the freshman's 5.0 innings.
However, the Mavs managed a total of just one run out of bases loaded, nobody out opportunities in the third and fifth innings against Meza. They also left the bases loaded without scoring in the seventh and finished with 13 runners left on base.
Meza earned the win to improve to 3-3 on the season.
Brian Nephew led the Mavericks (25-22, 13-12) by going 4-for-4 with an RBI single in the eighth.
The Mavericks scored twice in the second. Jesse Payne started the scoring when he came in on a wild pitch. Philip Incaviglia drove home the other when his two-out single brought in Chad Comer.
UTA added a run in the third when Payne's RBI groundout brought in Ryan Walker.
UT Arlington and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi renew their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
