ARLINGTON, Tex. - Mark Picca became the second UT Arlington player drafted in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday when the New York Mets selected him in the 41st round.
"I had an idea it was coming," Picca said. "We'd been talking with the Mets for a few weeks and I had just gotten back from a pre-draft workout with them this past weekend.
"When it happened I just started getting calls and texts from friends and family. I'm just happy for all I've been blessed with. Now is not the time to stop working. I'm going to go try to make the best out of the opportunity."
Picca, a senior left-handed pitcher, was the 1,242nd overall pick in the draft.
During his senior season, Picca went 1-1 with a 7.07 ERA. He made eight appearances with four starts, totaling 14.0 innings.
For his career, Picca went 4-10 with a 7.96 ERA. Picca earned his first collegiate victory on April 16, 2008 when he threw 6.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts at Texas.
"I'm extremely happy for Mark," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "It's a great opportunity for him. We certainly wish him the best of luck. He's an extremely hard worked and I know he will make the most of his opportunity."
