The UT Arlington golf team finds itself in fourth place after day one of the Wichita State/Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic.
The Mavericks faced a hot, windy day in Wichita and got off to a fast start with a team score of one-under par 283 before shooting a 293 in the day's second round to finish at eight-over 576.
"After we posted that good score in the first round, I thought we had a chance to play better in the afternoon but it wasn't easy out there in the afternoon," UTA head coach Jay Rees said.
Tougher it was, as each of the top five teams shot a higher score in the second round than in the first. UTA is 18 strokes behind first place Wichita State who stands at 10-under par. Kansas State (-9) and Oklahoma Christian is in third, just one stroke ahead of the Mavericks.
The Mavericks were led by junior Paul McConnell who is third after posting rounds of 68 and 70 to stand at four-under par 138. He trails Wichita State's Calvin Pearson heading into Tuesday's final round.
Senior Pierre Carlsson, playing in his first tournament for UTA shot 71-73 and is at two-over 144. Rounding out the Mavericks roster was Hunter Brown (+4, T22), Jamey Taylor (+6, T28) and Cash Wilkerson (+7, T33).
Two Mavericks played as individuals and Cameron Hollek finished in a tie for 22nd at 146 while Bryan Lichimo is in a tie for 33rd at 149.
UTA plays the final 18 holes of the tournament on Tuesday morning.
