The UT Arlington golf team returned to the same course Monday in which they won their conference championship last spring as they are hosting the UTA/Waterchase Invitational.
They will have to play a little catch up to win this tournament after taking the lead in the tournament after the first round but then finishing the first day in a tie for third.
The Mavericks shot a one-over par 289 in the first round but then were able to shoot 295 in the second round to fall behind tournament leader Wichita State. The Shockers shot 294 in the first round but then improved to 276 in the second to take the lead.
"Hopefully we can find a way to play better in the final round," UTA head coach Jay Rees said. "I thought we played pretty well in the first round, but we had a few bigger numbers in the second round and that has put us in a position to play from behind Tuesday."
Paul McConnell and Hunter Brown are the low Mavericks after the first two rounds as they each at even par, 144. Enrique Livas is in a tie for 17th after he finished the two rounds at two-over 146.
Cash Wilkerson is at six-over 150 and is in a tie for 36th. Jamey Taylor is in a tie for 44th after shooting 151 and is in a tie for 44th.
The Mavericks also fielded another team in the tournament. Cameron Hollek led that squad with an even par total of 144 and is in a tie for sixth. Bryan Lichimo (T44, 151), Brian Smith (T63, 154) and Brad Lyle (T86, 161) rounded out that four-man team.
Wichita State's Rafael Becker leads the tournament after shooting an eight-under 64 in the second round. His five-under total of 139 gives him a two-stroke lead over Sam Houston State's Scott Kelly.
The final round will start at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Admission to the tournament is free.
