SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Mavericks fell in straight sets to the UTSA Roadrunners today, 18-25, 7-25 and 18-25. The loss moves UT Arlington to 2-5 in the WAC and 6-13 overall.
Taylor Gross put the Mavs on the board in set one with a kill, 1-0. Amy Davault tapped a kill off of the Roadrunner block to tie things up at 4-4. Charmaine Whitmore and Shelby Dickson earned a stop at the net and a point to close the gap to two, 8-6.
Dickson found open court for a kill to stop the UTSA run, 11-7. UT Arlington was forced into a timeout after a Roadrunner kill to put them up 13-7 in the first set. Ashley Bennett tipped one over for a kill to put UTA down, 16-9. Despite a late push by the Mavs, UTSA closed out set one, 25-18.
UTSA jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in set two. Gross ended their run with a kill, 6-1. Stacey Koch notched a hard cross-court shot for a kill, 11-2. Whitmore and Davault earned a stop at the net to cut the Roadrunner lead to nine, 12-3. UTSA took set two, 25-7 to lead the Mavericks 2-0 in sets.
UT Arlington jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set behind the serve of Dickson. Gross expanded the Maverick lead to two with a kill through the Roadrunner block, 5-3. The aggressive offensive attack of UTSA took the lead from the Mavs, 17-7.
Koch knocked a kill off the block to end the run from UTSA and cut the lead to nine, 17-8. A block from Dickson and Bennett kept the Mavs in the mix at 18-10 in the third set. UT Arlington dropped the lead to six with tough serves and forced a Roadrunner timeout, 20-14.
Bennett and Gross earned a block and the point down 21-16 in set three. Davault kept up the pace with a kill, 22-17. UTSA took the set and the match, 25-18.
Bennett led the way offensively for the Mavs with six kills and a .400 attack percentage. Gross and Davault followed Bennett, both with five kills. Valerie Stetzer and Dickson both had eight digs and Davault tallied seven. Welsh notched 18 assists on the match.
"Nothing seemed to go our way today," UTA head coach Diane Seymour said. "We were on our heels and never got into a rhythm which caused us to struggle."
The Mavericks return home next week to host WAC opponent Idaho on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m. at College Park Center.
