Arlington, Texas - Brent Bollinger drove ahead the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth, as UT Arlington held on for a 3-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin. The Mavericks and Lumberjacks battled for nine innings on a near-perfect Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Hilton Invitational at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA starter Lance Day (3-0) worked eight innings and struck out five in picking up the win. Kasey Merck came in for the last out and picked up the save.
The Mavericks (5-2) took an early lead, taking advantage of a pair of hits in the bottom of the second. Michael Guerra singled to open the inning and advanced to third on Bollinger's ground-rule down the leftfield line.
Guerra eventually scored on a fielder's choice groundout from Philip Incaviglia. The 1-0 lead didn't last long, as the Lumberjacks scratched across a run on two hits.
UTA and SFA aren't done playing each other this season. The Southland Conference mates hook up in league play in late April in Nacagdoches, Texas.
The Mavericks won two of three games over the weekend. UTA is back in action with Tuesday afternoon's visit to Oklahoma.
