HAMMOND, Louisiana - Southeastern Louisiana pitcher Jordan Hymel stymied UT Arlington in the Lions' 4-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Mavericks managed only three hits off the left-hander in dropping their third consecutive game. UTA is 13-10 overall and 3-5 in the Southland Conference, and looks to avoid the sweep in Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m.
The Mavericks lost the series opener 8-7 on Friday night.
"He did a good job," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said of Hymel. "We just didn't make any adjustments, and the next thing you know the game is over and we've been shut out.
"It's disappointing after not getting that game last night. We melted down in the last two innings defensively and then weren't able to get anything going today. That's why we're under .500 in conference."
The Lions (17-6, 5-3) received all the scoring they would need on Brock Hebert's solo shot off scoreboard in left in the third. Brett Hoffman added a two-out RBI single in the fourth.
SLU added two more runs in the eighth to end the day for UTA starter Lance Day, who lost for the first time this season. Day (6-1) allowed eight hits and had retired nine straight batters going into the eighth.
UTA didn't have many chances to score. Lance Shortall nearly homered in the seventh, but his drive hooked foul. The Mavericks stranded runners at second base in the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
The Mavericks have been outscored by six runs in the three-game skid. UTA suffered the two previous losses in the bottom of the ninth.
Hymel fell one batter shy of a complete game and improved his record to 4-1 for the Lions.
