SAN ANTONIO, Texas - UT Arlington ran out of comebacks and dropped an 8-5 decision to UTSA on Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
The Mavericks dropped to 22-14 overall and 9-8 in the Southland Conference. The Roadrunners are 15-20 and 6-11.
The rubber match of the three-game set begins Sunday at 1 p.m. UTA is looking for its third consecutive conference series win.
"Not our best effort, I'll give them credit," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "We struck out 11 times and that's tough to do. We got behind and did a good job of fighting back, and then their bullpen did a nice job. We didn't score in the last four innings.
"We have to do a better job of taking the lead and running with it a little bit. Tomorrow is a big game. We need to get a series win. We need to find a way to somehow get a series win on the road. It's the biggest game of the year tomorrow."
Collin Reynolds started for the Mavericks and lasted four innings. The senior right hander allowed six runs, five being earned, and was victimized by two long balls in the hitter-friendly park. Reynolds fell to 3-1.
The Roadrunners took a 6-1 lead with four runs off Reynolds in the fourth, two via John Welborn's shot to left.
The Mavericks matched the UTSA output with four runs of their own in the fifth. Jordan Vaughn, Preston Morrow and Greg McCall each had run-scoring hits, and Philip Incaviglia had his second sacrifice fly of the game.
UTSA padded its lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and neither team scored over the last four innings.
Derek Miller, Vaughn and Morrow each had two hits for the Mavericks. Michael Oberto and Adam Westbrook did pitch three shutout innings of relief.
The Roadrunners took an early lead on Casey Selsor's home run to center to lead off the bottom of the first. UTSA squeezed another run across with the help of a Mavericks' error to go up 2-0.
UTA got back into it in the second by loading the bases with two hits and a walk. Incaviglia plated Preston Morrow with a sac to center.
