April 21, 2012

Final Stats

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Mavericks jumped out early Saturday afternoon with senior Jordan Vaughn's three-run homer in the first inning and UT Arlington cruised from there to a 13-4 victory over Northwestern State at Clay Gould Ballpark.

UTA improved to 25-14 overall and 12-8 in the Southland Conference. The Mavericks have won four consecutive league series.

Vaughn went two-for-four with two runs and four RBI.

"It felt good today, a lot of the guys were swinging well and we got some balls to fall so we're happy about it," Vaughn said.

UTA continued to pile it on in the second. A single to the pitcher from leadoff hitter Ryan Walker loaded the bases in the second inning and Derek Miller drew a walk, giving the Mavericks the 4-0 lead. Preston Beck drove in one run and Michael Guerra singled up the middle, driving in two more.

Vaughn doubled down the left field line and Guerra picked up the fifth run of the inning. Vaughn scored after Brent Bollinger singled into shallow left field, driving Vaughn in. UT Arlington wrapped up the inning picking up six runs with five hits.

UTA picked up a run in the third when Derek Miller singled to left field, scoring Walker, who doubled down the right field line.

In the top of the sixth the Demons (14-22, 10-10) loaded the bases with one out when Shawn Hoover drove the ball into shallow left and Northwestern State scored two run. The Demons picked up two more runs in the inning before the inning would end.

The Mavericks drove in three more runs in the eighth inning, giving UTA the 13-4 lead.

Zach Thompson picked up a win improving to 2-2. The freshman threw just over five innings, giving up four runs, only one earned.

"It was a good game, we got out early," UT Arlington head coach Darin Thomas said. "I thought Zach Thompson had another really good start and (Michael) Oberto was really good in relief.

"All around, it's just a good game"

The series finale will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark as UT Arlington aims to finish the sweep.
