ARLINGTON, Texas - The long ball was Dallas Baptist's best friend in Wednesday night's 12-6 victory over UT Arlington at Patriot Field.
DBU homered five times in beating the Mavericks for the second straight night. UTA, which lost 3-0 Tuesday in Arlington, falls to 27-19.
"We're going to hit some home runs, but we didn't hit any," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said.
The Patriots (31-14) jumped on UTA early, hitting two home runs to left off starter Kasey Merck in the first inning for a 4-0 lead.
The Mavericks closed the gap to 4-3 in the third. An error, single and walk loaded the bases for Ryan Walker, who delivered a two-run single. Two batters later, Michael Guerra rolled one through the left side to score Derek Miller.
The rally was short lived. The Patriots added another solo shot in the bottom of the third and scored on a throwing error, pushing their lead to 6-3 and chasing Merck. Thomas turned to Chase Weaver with two on and none out.
Walker, in the No. 2 spot in the lineup, played the part of run-producer again in the fifth with a single up the middle to plate Miller. Walker finished with three hits and three RBI.
DBU's Ryan Behmanesh answered with his second dinger in the bottom of the inning for a 7-4 edge and the Patriots kept adding on from there.
The Mavericks return to Southland Conference play Friday with the start of the three-game home series against league leader Sam Houston. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
"We'll be ready to go on Friday," Thomas said.
