ARLINTON, Texas - For the first time in College Park Center's young volleyball history, a match went five-sets. UT Arlington (2-2) was on the losing side of its hard-fought battle against North Texas (5-0) falling 3-2.
"It was very exciting," UTA volleyball coach Diane Seymour said. "We knew it would be. It is always a good battle when we play against North Texas. We didn't play very well against them last year and we were looking forward to the match this year. It was very exciting and well fought."
The Mavericks started out the first-set in control. UTA scored nine of the matches first 12-points and cruise to a first set victory 26-24. The first set was the Mean Green's first set to lose this season - it had won its previous 12.
The match then went back and forth between the teams as it each split the concurring sets throughout the game culminating in a tie-breaking fifth set.
North Texas came out in the tie-breaker scoring the sets first three points forcing UTA to call an early timeout. The early run was too much for the Mavericks to overcome falling 15-10 to complete the match.
Junior outside hitter Shelby Dickson completed her fourth double-double in as many games in the match.
"Honestly the middle blocker is pulling the block away," Dickson said. "I just work hard that's all I do. I don't care about stats I just do everything for the team."
Dickson finished with 13-kills and 18-digs. She was joined by fellow teammate Amy Davault who also had 13-kills and contributed 16-digs.
UTA travels to Chicago this weekend for its second tournament of the season. The Mavericks face UIC on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Eastern Michigan and IPFW on Saturday.
