SERIES: UT Arlington and Eastern Michigan are meeting for the first time.
ABOUT EASTERN MICHIGAN: With a 4-0 record to start the 2013-14 campaign, the EMU hoops team is off to its best start in the 21st century. The last time the Eagles opened up the season with at least four straight victories was the 1996-97 season when Earl Boykins and Derrick Dial led EMU to six consecutive wins to begin the season. That season was sandwiched between two trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles have beaten UTA common opponents Robert Morris and Cleveland State.
LAST TIME OUT: UT Arlington spent just about every second of Thursday night's visit to Robert Morris playing catch-up, and despite tying the game late, the Mavericks couldn't get over the hump in an 88-81 setback at Sewall Center. Senior guard Reger Dowell scored 26 points - his sixth consecutive game of at least 20 - to lead five Mavericks in double figures. Senior forward Brandon Edwards scored 10 and grabbed 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double. Junior guard Jamel Outler (15 points), junior forward Vincent Dillard (11 points), junior guard Lonnie McClanahan (10 points) also reached double digits. UT Arlington fell behind by 14 points to start the game and trailed by as many as 15 in the first half before making things interesting late. The game's only tie came with more than six minutes left, but that was as close at the Mavericks would ever get to leading.
ALL REGER, ALL THE TIME: Dowell scored career-high 35 (tied for 20th in UTA history) vs. HPU and has scored at least 20 in all six games. Dowell is 12th nationally in scoring (25.0 ppg). He averaged 28.0 points on UTA's three-game homestand last week. The last UT Arlington player to score at least 30 was Marquez Haynes (32 points) on Feb. 6, 2010.
BOARD MACHINE: Edwards is 29th nationally in rebounding at 10.8 per game. He has four double-doubles this season, including three games in a row. He began season 17th on UTA's all-time rebounding list and is now up to ninth.
ONE TO BEAT: Scott Cross is second all-time in wins at UTA with 124. Eddie McCarter (162 from 1993-2006) is the leader. Cross passed Bob "Snake" LeGrande (122) on Nov. 12 vs. Samford.
TRIPLE DIGITS: UTA's 111 points vs. Howard Payne (11/13) were most since 124 vs. Sam Houston State (12/28/98) and tied for 18th all-time in school history.
SCORING BIG: UTA scored at least 87 in the first three games. The last time UTA had such a stretch was four in a row from Dec. 1-11, 1992: 91 (Concordia-Lutheran), 121 (Schreiner), 105 (Sul Ross State), 95 (Gonzaga).
DOUBLE FIGURES: At least four Mavs scored double figures in four games this season: Boise State (4), Samford (5), Howard Payne (4) and Robert Morris (5).
MAVERICK DEBUTS: Six players made their UTA debuts at Boise State: Dowell, G Lonnie McClanahan, Dillard, F Jorge Bilbao, Williams and G Courtney Austin. Four of the five starters at Boise State didn't play at UTA in 2012-13: Dowell, McClanahan, Dillard and C Stuart Lagerson, who redshirted last season.
NEW BLOOD: Bilbao made his first career start at Kentucky, joining Dowell, McClanahan, Dillard and Edwards. Bilbao has started the last two games.
