Edinburg, Texas - UT Arlington fell 75-63 Wednesday night against the University of Texas-Pan American at UTPA Fieldhouse.
"We turned the ball over way too many times and that's the part that got us the best," UT Arlington coach Krista Gerlich said. "I thought the first half we really came out and executed some things against their zone."
Senior guard Laila Suleiman led the team with 17 points. Joining Suleiman in double-figure scoring were Tahlia Pope (11) and Malaika Green (10).
UTA drops to 0-10 with one game left before heading into Sun Belt Conference play. UTPA improved to 6-4.
The Mavericks won the tipoff and held the pace of the game to open the half. UTA shot 56 percent from the floor and was 6-9 from beyond the arc.
Suleiman had the hot hand scoring back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers, giving the Mavs a 26-15 lead. UTPA came within one point, 35-34, but Green knocked down another 3-pointer to extend the lead and the Mavericks headed into the locker room up 39-36.
The Broncs took their first lead, 47-45, on a pair of free throws during a 6-0 run. Suleiman made her fifth 3-pointer of the game to close the gap, but UTPA came back with two of their own.
The Mavericks return home to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The men's team plays host to CSU Bakersfield at 1 p.m. at College Park Center.
