BSB: Mavs drop defensive battle at Texas

Feb. 19, 2013

Final Stats

AUSTIN, Texas - The UT Arlington Mavericks had their chances against Texas, but couldn't capitalize in Tuesday night's 2-1 loss to the Longhorns before 5,057 announced fans at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Mavericks (3-1) lost their first game of the season after opening with a three-game sweep of Louisiana Tech. Texas (3-1) avenged a 7-5 loss to UT Arlington last season in Austin.

"I thought we played well," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "We didn't make an error, we pitched well and we had our chances. We had guys in position to score and more than once we were one hit away from scoring a few, but give them credit. They ran good arms out there."

The Mavericks had the leadoff hitter on in each of the first five innings and again in the ninth, but were able to push just one run across. Five Longhorn pitchers combined to allow seven hits. Peter Cuomo and Matt Shortall each had two hits.

Chad Nack (1-1) made his first career start for UT Arlington after making 22 appearances out of the bullpen last year and one last weekend. The sophomore right hander worked three innings, giving up two runs on four hits in taking his first loss.

UT Arlington had a golden chance to get on the board in the first, loading the bases with one out. Texas escaped the inning unscathed as Shortall struck out and Jake Pinchback flied out.

The Longhorns took a 2-0 lead with three hits in the bottom of the third off Nack. Eric Weiss had the big blow with a two-run single to left.

The Mavericks sliced the lead in half in the fourth. Shortall lined a shot into the right-center gap that rolled to the wall as he lumbered to third. Pinchback's chopper to third easily scored Shortall.

Zach Thompson relieved Nack in the fourth, went three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit. The sophomore righty got out of the second-and-third jam with one out in the sixth a ground out and strikeout.

The Mavericks had Cuomo and Travis Sibley on in the seventh with one out, but two fly outs ended the threat.

Chad Hollingsworth (1-0) worked five innings in his first career start for Texas, giving up one run on four hits.

The Mavericks return to action with the start of a three-game home series Friday against Northeastern at Clay Gould Ballpark. First pitch is 6:30. A Saturday doubleheader starts at noon.
