SAN ANTONIO, Texas - UT Arlington fell 73-45 to UTSA Saturday night at the Convocation Center in San Antonio.
"UTSA came out and played some smash-mouth basketball," UT Arlington coach Samantha Morrow said. "They set the tone early. It was a physical basketball game tonight and they were just more physical than us."
The Mavericks turned the ball over their first four possessions of the game and had not put up a shot until Jordan Holub hit a jumper to tie the game 2-2.
UTSA took the lead, but Desherra Nwanguma tied the game again with back-to-back baskets. The Roadrunners went on an 8-0 run until Holub put the Mavs back on the board.
Both teams played physical defense, with the two teams combining for 10 steals and six blocks in the half.
UTSA extended their lead to 10 with a layup from Whitney Wright to put the Roadrunners up 29-19 for their largest lead of the first half.
Mannasha Bell, who didn't have a point in the first half, came in off the bench early in the second half and scored six points for the Roadrunners. UTSA led by as many as 31 in the second half.
UTSA's Ashley Spaletta had a standout game shooting 7-13 from beyond the arc and finishing with 21 points.
The Mavericks shot 40 percent from the floor and didn't get enough shots up to keep up with the Roadrunners shooting 45.2 percent.
