BSB: McCall leads Mavs past LA Tech in 14 innings

March 30, 2013

Final Stats

Sunday Probable Starting Pitchers
UTA - Zach Thompson (2-2, 6.00 ERA) vs. LA Tech - Richie Navari (1-4, 5.01 ERA)

RUSTON, Louisiana - Greg McCall drilled a two-run single in the 14th inning to lift UT Arlington to a 3-1 victory over Louisiana Tech on a soggy-turned-sunny-turned-dark Sunday at J.C. Love Field.

The Mavericks (14-12) continue to sit tied for first place in the Western Athletic Conference, improving to 4-1 going into Sunday's series finale looking for a sweep. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., though rain in the area could impact the start time.

A combined 29 runners were left on base in the first game to go into extra innings for both teams. The Mavericks used five pitchers, while LA Tech (11-18, 1-4) went through another five.

"Great team win," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "Big innings pitched out of the bullpen and McCall was clutch again tonight at the plate."

The Mavericks struggled to get much offense going against the first three Bulldog pitchers, led by starter Trevor Peterson. But UT Arlington loaded the bases in the 13th against Sam Alvis on singles from Brandon Lawrence and Travis Sibley sandwiched around a walk to Jake Pinchback.

That brought up McCall and a pitching change with a 2-0 count. McCall greeted right-handed reliever Dakota Doss with a two-run single off the base of the wall in left. UTA reliever Chad Nack (3-3) worked the last of his three innings in the 14th to pick up the win.

The Mavericks picked up their first run thanks to McCall. Picking up where he left off after driving in three runs Friday, the junior catcher delivered a two-out single to right in the seventh to score J.M. Twichell and knot the score 1-1.

Mavericks starter Chase Weaver went four innings, giving up one run on six hits. Daniel Milliman came on in relief in the fifth and pitched 3.1 innings. John Beck worked another 3.1 innings and Kennedy Winn got a big out in the 11th. UT Arlington relievers would go 10 shutout innings.

The Bulldogs got on the board with Bre'Shon Kimbell's solo home run to left in the fourth off Weaver. LA Tech has lost five straight to the Mavericks this season, including a nonconference sweep in Arlington.
