April 20, 2013

Game 1 Final Stats / Game 2 Final Stats

GAME 3: UTA - Daniel Milliman (2-2, 2.55 ERA) vs. SU - Andrew Olson (2-4, 5.84 ERA)

BELLEVUE, Washington - UT Arlington came back to win the second game of Saturday's doubleheader to gain a split with Seattle University. The Mavericks 3-1 victory followed 10-3 loss on a rainy afternoon at Bannerwood Park.

The Mavericks are 21-17 overall and 10-4 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Redhawks are 14-23 and 4-9. The series concludes Sunday with a 2 p.m. CT first pitch.

UT Arlington starter Zach Thompson picked up the win in the second game, improving to 5-2 with a complete game six-hitter. The sophomore right hander threw 133 pitches in a game that included a rain delay.

"Zach was huge for us," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "He really picked us up on a day with some tough conditions. Now we have to go out tomorrow and try to win this series."

The Mavericks jumped on top in the second. Brandon Lawrence doubled down the line in left. John Michael Twichell bounced one back to the pitcher, who appeared to get Lawrence in a rundown, but the SU shortstop couldn't pull the trigger on a throw and Lawrence scampered safely to third.

Peter Cuomo singled up the middle to score Lawrence and give the Mavericks their first lead (1-0) of the day.

The Redhawks tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth after a 33-minute rain delay. Brian Olsen delivered an RBI single with two outs to score Ryan Sanders from second.

The Mavericks regained the lead in the sixth. Lawrence walked with one out and moved to third on Twichell's single to right. Lawrence scored on a Travis Sibley's bunt single that left pitcher Garrett Anderson without a play.

Another bunt, this one from Cuomo, in the eight brought Lawrence to the plate to give the Mavericks a 3-1 edge.

UT Arlington crawled out of a 4-0 hole in Game 1, but SU broke the game open with six runs in the seventh inning. The Mavericks had their three-game conference winning streak snapped in the first-ever meeting with Seattle U.

The Mavericks threatened in the third, but couldn't push a run across. Sibley doubled off the wall in left with one out in the third and Twichell followed with a walk. A foul pop and grounded ended the inning.

The Redhawks got to UTA starter Brad Vachon, scoring four runs from the third to fifth innings. Two hits, plus an error, loaded the bases with one out, setting up Nate Roberts' two-run single to right in the third. A suicide squeeze added another run in the fourth and Roberts homered in the fifth.

UT Arlington cut the four-run deficit with three runs in the sixth, all scoring with two outs. Justin Copeland and Greg McCall had RBI singles, scoring Twichell and Derek Miller, respectively. Copeland would come around thanks to two wild pitches by SU starter Ted Hammond.
