ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington struggled to generate much offense in Friday night's 7-2 loss to Texas State at open a crucial Western Athletic Conference series at Clay Gould Ballpark.
With the victory, the Bobcats (25-24, 14-8) moved a game ahead of the Mavericks (25-24, 13-9) in the league standings. The teams came into the game tied for second in the WAC. The series continues Saturday with a 2 p.m. first pitch.
UT Arlington was held in check by Bobcats starter Lucas Humpal and managed only six hits for the game. Humpal (4-2) worked 6.1 innings, allowed two runs and struck out five.
"We gave nine free bases and on a Friday night you're not going to win doing that," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said, referring to eight walks and a hit batter. "We didn't play good defense, we were bad offensively, our approach was bad. It was just all-around bad."
The Bobcats scored twice in the first off UT Arlington starter Brad Vachon. Garrett Mattlage had the big blow for Texas State with a run-scoring triple to right-center.
The Mavericks cut the Bobcats' lead in half in the second. Justin Copeland walked to open the inning and reached third on Greg McCall's double off the wall in center. John Michael Twichell's groundout brought Copeland home.
Texas State added runs in the third and fourth to chase Vachon, who dropped to 6-4. The Bobcats touched up reliever Chase Weaver for three runs in the sixth to lead 7-1.
