ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington retook sole possession of second place in the Western Athletic Conference with Sunday afternoon's 10-2 victory over rival Texas State at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Mavericks (27-24) improved to 15-9 in conference with one league series remaining. The Bobcats (25-26, 14-10) had moved ahead of UTA after Friday's series-opening win, but drop back into third after losing the final two games. CSU Bakersfield continues to lead the WAC.

"I'm proud of the way we came out," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "It was a long game yesterday, and it's tough against a good club to lose the first one like we did on Friday."

Daniel Milliman (4-3) turned in a strong performance when the Mavericks needed it most. A day after the bullpen went eight innings in a 6-5 victory, Milliman was able to eat up six scoreless innings before running into trouble in the seventh. The junior gave up two runs, and left the game after 6.1 innings with the Mavericks comfortably ahead.

"We were pretty thin and he got us into the seventh," Thomas said of Milliman. "He did a great job. He keeps getting better every time he goes out there. I was proud of him."

Greg McCall, Matt Shortall and Brandon Lawrence each drove in two runs for the Mavericks. Shortall, McCall, Derek Miller and Ryan Walker each scored twice. UT Arlington made the most of its 10 hits. The Bobcats did make five errors.

The Mavericks chased Texas State starter Mitchell Pitts in the fifth. McCall's bases-loaded double down the line in right gave UTA a 5-0 lead, as the Bobcats turned to reliever Covey Morrow. Another run came home via a bases-loaded walk.

UT Arlington tacked on two more runs for an 8-0 lead in the sixth on two hits, a wild pitch, two Texas State errors and Shortall's sacrifice fly. Runs in the seventh and eighth closed out the scoring for UTA.

UT Arlington expanded an early lead to 3-0 in the fourth. John Michael Twichell's double off the wall in right and Lawrence's groundout scored Shortall and McCall, respectively.

The Mavericks struck in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of a Texas State error. Miller reached, took second on a wild pitch and came around to score on Shortall's single up the middle.

The afternoon began with Senior Day ceremonies. Lawrence, Brent Bollinger, Cody Dyvig, Jake Pinchback and Kennedy Winn were honored before game, as each was given a framed jersey commemorating their UT Arlington careers.

The Mavericks have concluded the home portion of their regular-season schedule at 17-12. UT Arlington makes a short trip Tuesday at TCU before traveling to Sacramento State for a three-game WAC series starting Thursday. The WAC Tournament begins May 22 at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie.
