Final Stats
FORT WORTH, Texas - The UT Arlington Mavericks fell to 27-25 on the year with a 2-1 loss to TCU Tuesday at Lupton Stadium.
"I think we pitched well and we had a lot of hits tonight," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "I think tonight gave confidence to some guys that needed it and hopefully they take that down the stretch."
Despite only scoring one run, eight of nine Maverick batters had a hit in the contest against TCU. John Michael Twichell singled to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning after the Horned Frogs earned a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Matt Shortall and Greg McCall each had two hits in the 2-1 loss.
John Beck picked up the loss and fell to 1-6 on the season. He pitched 3.2 innings in relief for starting pitcher Chad Nack, and allowed one run on one hit with four strikeouts.
Back-to-back singles from the Frogs would put runners at the corners for Nack in the bottom of the first inning. TCU rolled into a double play, but not before the run scored to give the Frogs an early 1-0 lead. A UTA single, fielder's choice and hit by pitch would load the bases for the Mavericks with two outs in the top of the second inning, but a grounder would end the scoring threat.
Ryan Walker tagged a one-out single over the Frogs' first baseman and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt in an attempt to plate the first UTA run of the game. But a strike out swinging would end the Maverick half of the fifth inning.
McCall recorded the fifth hit of the game for UT Arlington with a leadoff double in the top of the sixth. Brandon Copeland followed up with a single to put Mavs on the corners with no out. Twichell singled into right field to plate a run and tie the ballgame 1-1. Travis Sibley kept the rally going with a two-out single to load the bases full of Mavericks, but a strikeout would strand three.
Shortall and McCall both notched their second hits of the contest with one out in the top of the seventh inning. A traditional 6-4-3 double play from TCU would end yet another Maverick scoring rally. Beck allowed his first base runner of his relief outing with a hit by pitch in the bottom of the eighth.
A sacrifice bunt and a single would put Frogs on the corners with one out. TCU would lay down a squeeze bunt to take the lead 2-1, and Thomas began playing pitching match-ups by bringing in Kennedy Winn followed by Brent Bollinger. TCU wouldn't score any more runs, but the Mavs couldn't tie the game in the top of the ninth.
The Mavericks will conclude regular season WAC play this weekend at Sacramento State with a three-game series beginning Thursday. UT Arlington will be fighting to earn a top seed in the WAC Tournament to take place at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie from May 22-26.
