Oct. 6, 2014 ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's tennis had a great showing at the Billie Jean King Invitational at Flushing Meadows, home of the U.S. Open in New York. Sophomore Astrid Gehre was a finalist in the B-division, while fellow teammates Elizabeth Thoms, Christine Foote and Jessica Birowski all made it to the semis in their singles division. Gehre won every set in the competition leading up to the B-division finals. Advancing through the bracket Gehre had great victories over highly-competitive opponents before facing Harvard's June Lee in the B-Division finals. After taking the first set 6-0, Gehre came up short losing set two 6-0 and then lost the final set 10-7.
Thoms, Foote and Birowski were victorious in the A-division singles, C-division singles and D-division singles, respectively. The Mavericks defeated their first two opponents with ease, but came up short in the semifinals.
Thoms was defeated by Monica Lin of Harvard 6-1, 3-6, 10-8 in A-Division, Foote then lost a grueling match to Harvard's Amy He 6-4, 6-4, and Birowski fell to Fordham's Mikola Cooper 5-7,5-7, 10-6.
In the doubles divisions, Gehre and Augustina Serio made it to the finals of their division defeating three separate tandems. The duo fought hard in the finals but lost to St. John's Morozova and Stanisz 8-5. In the B-division, Birowski and Ekaterina Tugarinova made it to the semifinals. The Mavericks will have a few days off and then get back on the courts to prepare for the ITA Texas Regionals in Waco, Texas from Oct. 16-20. ​
