ARLINGTON, Texas - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association named UT Arlington softball sophomore Marisa Datko and former pitcher Callie Collins 2013-14 NFCA All-American Scholar Athletes.
Datko, a two-time high school scholar-athlete, emphasized the importance of the classroom and how it is a priority to succeed.
"School has been really important for me all throughout high school and especially now in college," Datko said. "Softball is a priority, but I want to make sure I keep my grades up, too. The higher my grades are the better it looks for the program, so I do it for the team also."
To be eligible for the award, the student-athletes were required to maintain a 3.50 during the 2013-14 academic calendar.
UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox has now had five athletes earn the nomination.
"She has done great in helping us," Datko said of Fox. "She always emphasizes the importance of school work and getting our study hall hours in. She will always help us in any way that we need it."
