ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington sophomore MB Briana Sharratt was named today to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) honorable mention All-American team after being selected as an AVCA All-Southwest Region performer last week.
Sharratt becomes the first Maverick player in 25 years to pick up All-American honors with the last UTA player to pick up All-American status being Shawn Sweeten and Chris Rudiger in 1989.
"We are thrilled that Briana was recognized as an Honorable Mention All-American which is the first time in over twenty years that we've had someone earn this award which is a high honor for both her and the university," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "Briana is someone who hits for such a high percentage that other teams have to be aware of her on the court and this season she was so efficient for us offensively and in her blocking."
Sharratt picks up the All-American honors after a successful second season where she led the Mavericks in blocks with 165 (1.32 per set) and registered a school-record hitting percentage of .414. Sharratt also recorded double-digit kills in nine matches and notched double-digit blocks on two separate occasions. Sharratt's blocking mark sits as the sixth best blocking season by a Maverick player in school history.
The 6-1 MB earned Sun Belt First Team All-Conference honors at the conference tournament in San Marcos in late November becoming the second Maverick player in two years to earn first team honors.
