BSB: UTA bested at No. 6 Texas

April 15, 2014

Final Stats

AUSTIN, Texas - A challenging week for UT Arlington began with Tuesday night's 10-2 loss to No. 6 Texas at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Mavericks dropped to 16-21 after the first of four consecutive games against Top 10 teams. UTA resumes Sun Belt play with a three-game series beginning Friday with Sun Belt-leading UL Lafayette at Clay Gould Ballpark. The Rajin' Cajuns (34-4) are ranked No. 2 in the BaseballAmerica.com poll.

"We struggled on the mound," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "We can't pitch like that. Everytime they scored more than one run in an inning there were walks or hit batters involved. We dug ourselves a hole. It is very disappointing. It isn't encouraging going into this weekend."

The Longhorns (30-8) scored six runs in the third and fourth innings to take control. Texas is 56-17 all-time against the Mavericks, with all but one game being played in Austin.

Control was an issue for the six UT Arlington pitchers, who issued eight walks and a wild pitch that scored a run. Texas took advantage of the free passes, needing just seven hits to score in double figures.

The Mavericks took advantage of Texas starter Blake Goins' wildness in the second, loading the bases with no outs on two walks and Ryan Bottger's single. Darien McLemore chopped reliever Chad Hollingsworth first pitch to the first baseman, scoring Bottger for a 1-0 lead.

The threat ended there. Travis Sibley attempted to bunt John Michael Twichell home, but Twichell was caught in a rundown. Derek Miller popped up for the third out, leaving two runners stranded.

The Longhorns got to UTA starter Zach Hobbs in the third, chasing the lefty after he gave up three runs. Texas added another three runs (two unearned) in the fourth off Jess Amedee.

Sibley doubled with one out in the fifth and scored on Miller's single up the middle. The Mavericks wouldn't score again, leaving nine men on base and managing just six hits.
