T&F: UTA track impresses at Michael Johnson Classic

WACO, Texas - The UT Arlington men's and women's track teams continued their impressive seasons Saturday at the Michael Johnson Dr Pepper Classic in Waco, Texas. The Mavericks picked up multiple event wins and also established new top-5 school times at the one-day meet.

The UTA men won the 4x100 relay with a time of 39.80. Clayton Vaughn ran a strong acnchor leg on a squad that also featured Aaron Gabriel, Quentin Butler and Cameron Newson. The sub-40 time is just .22 off the school record.

Vaughn placed third in the 100m, second among collegians, with a time of 10.34. He finished just .03 behind former Mavs great and 100m champion Cordero Gray.

Also for the men, Roland Sales won the high jump with a mark of 2.05m (6-08.75). Also in the field, Omar Barnes took the runner-up spot in the triple jump with a leap of 14.45m (47-05.00).

Ivan Storic was the runner up in the javelin after registering a throw of 230 feet, 1 inch (70.14m). It ranks as the second longest throw in school history, just 18 inches shy of the record set in 1988.

For the women, Hannah Nilsson was the runner up in the 1500m (4:29.01) with a time just off her personal best. In addition, Shae Johnson narrowly missed a top-5 school mark in a second-place finish in the triple jump (12.20m).

In the women's pole vault, the Mavericks took the third and fourth spots, courtesy of Noemie Forget and Julianne Burch. Forget cleared 3.65m, while Burch topped the 3.50m mark. Meanwhile, in the 800m, Ashly Wright nabbed fourth (2:07.28) and Tamerah Gorham was one spot behind (2:10.79).

Other top-5 finishes in the finals included: Samantha Little in the discus (4th, 45.47m), Aaron Purser in the steeplechase (4th, 9:50.32), Renan Palma in the 110m hurdles (5th, 14.57), Brandon Waller in the triple jump (4th, 14.20) and long jump (5th, 7.01m), Philip Critelli in the 800m (5th, 1:53.03) and Grant Copeland in the 1500m (5th, 3:57.10).

Next week's slate for UTA athletes includes appearances at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, and the Bobcat Classic in San Marcos, Texas.
