BSB: Mavs take SBC series at Troy

April 27, 2014

Final Stats

TROY, Alabama - Matt Shortall's run-scoring single in the eighth lifted UT Arlington to Sunday afternoon's 6-5 win over Sun Belt Conference foe Troy at Riddle-Pace Field.

The Mavericks also won the series two games to one, improving to 20-24 overall and 11-10 in conference. UTA has won its last three Sun Belt road series.

"I'm real proud of our guys," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "Hard-fought win today. The bullpen was good. Daniel (Milliman) gave us everything he could and we went 4 1/3 (innings) out of the 'pen with no runs. We found a way to outscore them, and it wasn't easy.

"They're a good club. It was a tough road win and a tough road series. Look forward to getting ready for next week."

The Mavericks had 17 hits, tying their second most of the season, and survived despite leaving 13 men on base. Every starter had a hit, led by Darien McLemore's three. Shortall, Eric Tate, Ryan Bottger, Greg McCall and Levi Scott each had two.

UTA's bullpen also deserves credit in the victory. Jacob Moreland (1-2) earned the victory in relief, and the Trojans didn't score in the final four innings. Chad Nack got the final five outs for his second save.

The Trojans (21-24, 8-12) scored a run with two outs in each of the first two innings. David Hall had a run-scoring single in the first and Trevin Hall had a solo home run in the second.

The Mavericks came back with a run in the second on McLemore's two-out single to score McCall. UTA took a 5-2 lead with a four-run fifth built on Scott's two-run triple and John Michael Twichell's two-run homer over the 35-foot wall in right.

UT Arlington starter Daniel Milliman couldn't hold the three-run cushion, and was relieved by Jess Amedee with one out in the fifth. The Trojans racked up four hits in the inning to tie it 5-5 going into the sixth.

Tate scored the go-ahead run in the eighth after opening the inning with a walk and advancing to second on a botched pickoff attempt. Shortall followed with a grounder up the middle to bring Tate home with what proved to be the game-winning run.

The Mavericks have two nonconference games this week at Clay Gould Ballpark, with Texas Wesleyan visiting Tuesday (6 p.m.) and Arlington Baptist on Wednesday (2 p.m.). UT Arlington resumes Sun Belt play Friday with the start of a three-game series at UALR.
