ARLINGTON, Texas - In a season consumed with long days full of hard work and commitment, the Mavericks concluded their fall schedule with a fun, energy filled costume day.
The weather was not able to scare the team away for the annual contest, as the UTA softball team went inside to the Justin D. Wilson Batting Facility.
The girls were split into four teams, each led by a senior captain. Disney was the theme of the day with each team dressing up as different characters from Disney movies or television shows.
UTA got its competitive juices flowing by playing each other in a fun game called "Over the line." After several games, it came down to two teams, Alice in Wonderland versus Frozen, for the championship game. In a hard fought battle, it was Frozen who came out on top.
Winner of the over the line event and best costume for her team winner, Shelbi Sikes was more than thrilled about the day.
"We really worked hard this year on keeping our energy up and then coming in here and having fun and showing that we all love to play together is great," Sikes said. "It's not just on the field, we still love each other throughout everything. We all look forward to this practice. I love how we all go all out on it."
Following the games, the coaches and spectators took a vote on best costume theme, with Alice in Wonderland taking home the award. Senior leader and Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, Britnea Barilli always looks forward to dressing up and changing things up for practice.
"It's just really competitive," Barilli said. "We play over the line, which is a really fun game where it's just simple catching and throwing and base hits. Everyone looks forward to this because it is fun dressing up and it's just a fun day, and it's a good way to end the season."
While Alice in Wonderland and Frozen were the teams competing in the final game, the teams of Kim Possible and The Incredibles also we enjoyed the day. Mya Anderson dressed as Rufus the naked mole rat from Kim Possible and Kacey Everett who was Edna Mode, the fashion designer from The Incredibles, won best costumes for their respective teams.
