ARLINGTON, Texas - The UTA women's tennis team fell short Sunday morning against the University of Central Florida, losing 4-2. The match was meant to take place at the UTA Tennis Center, however, due to weather was moved to the SMU indoor facility.
The Mavericks got out to a good start taking the doubles point from UCF.
Angeles de los Rios and
Jessica Birowski paired up to take on Sofia Baptista and Clare Mendell in the No. 2 slot. After going back and forth on games, de los Rios and Birowski were able to finish strong and defeated UCF 6-4.
Shortly after,
Elizabeth Thoms paired up with freshman Augustina Serio to take on UCF's Cortney Cesarini and Monica Matias at No. 3. UTA's pair was able to clinch the doubles point by winning 6-4.
The women had momentum going into dual play, but UCF's power and quickness helped detour the Mavericks from a match victory. De los Rios showed great effort defeating Kennan Johnson 6-4, 6-4, but that would be Mavs' solo win in dual play. Birowski and
Christine Foote battled hard taking their match to three sets, but unfortunately came up short.
The Mavericks fall to 6-3 on the season and will be back in action March 5 to take on Xavier at the UTA Tennis Center.
