LAREDO, Texas - After a consistent first two rounds throughout the lineup Friday, UT Arlington is tied for seventh at the 2015 Border Olympics.
The five members on the scoring squad were between par and 3 over at Laredo Country Club. Jake Argento and Cash Wilkerson led the way, shooting matching even-par 144s and tying for 31st. Both shot a 72 in each round.
Zack Galliford (T38) followed up a 2-under 40 in the morning session before 75 to sit at 1 over. Jake Greenspoon (T43) recovered from a 75 with a 71 to settle in at plus 2. Aaron Guanlao (T53) bounced back from a 77 to score for UTA in the afternoon with a 2-under 70.
"We had a good day," UTA interim coach Stuart Powell said. "The course was in good shape so no excuses. We started the first round playing extremely well, but lost strokes coming down the stretch and finished at 1-over-par 289."
The Mavericks combined to shoot a solid 2-under 574 as a team, tying with New Mexico State at 10 shots back of co-leaders Baylor and host Houston.
"Everyone played hard and I was super impressed the way the freshmen stepped up to the plate," Powell said, referring to Guanlao and Greenspoon. "The team's 285 was the third-lowest score of the second round and vaulted the team into a tie for seventh."
Marley Sweeney, playing as an individual, was tied with fifth after firing a 4-under 68 in the first round. He came back with an 80 in the after to drop into a tie for 73rd.
The 18-team field resumes play Saturday morning with the third and final round.
