TN: Mavs close out a weekend of matches on top

- After falling at No. 18 TCU on Saturday 7-0, the UTA men's tennis team returned home to defeat Lamar University 4-1 on Sunday.


"We played really hard against a really good team," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "I was proud of the way we fought and kept the intensity throughout the entire match."

The Mavericks traveled to Fort Worth on Saturday night to face the ranked Horned Frogs. Despite the final score, UTA battled.

Sophomores Johnathan Gonzalez and Mario Muniesa paired up in theNo. 1slot to defeat the No. 29 ranked pairing Nick Cahppel and Will Stein 6-2. UTA teammates Sebastian Erimicioiu and Pablo Colvee fought againstthe No. 23 pair of Blake Hudson and Lugones Facundo, but came up short losing 6-4.

After losing the doubles point the Mavericks continued to fight, but were unable to avoid the sweep.

"I was proud of the way our men played," Benitez said. "Although we lost, we battled hard against a top-ranked team that has proven they belong up in the rankings."

The men were back in action Sunday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center against Lamar. After a two-hour weather delay, the Mavericks went straight into dual play where they proved their dominance over the Cardinals.

Gonzalez was the first of four Mavs to get a victory over the Cardinals by defeating Benny Schweizer 6-1, 6-1. Carlos Arbiza defeated Juuso Laitinen 6-2, 6-1 to give the Mavs a 2-1 lead over Lamar, getting them one step closer to clinching the match.

Muniesa defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-2 and Erimicioiu came in with the clutch win over Nikita Lis to clinch the 4-1 match for the Mavericks. The Mavericks are now 10-5 on the season and will look to build on their win streak when they take on Baylor March 29 in Waco.
