ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's tennis pushed its winning streak to three matches after defeating UAB 4-1 Tuesday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center.
"I was very proud of the way our girls battled today," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "We didn't play our best tennis today, but we came together and got the win."
With a match clincher from Astrid Gehre, the Mavericks extended their record to 9-4 overall and 7-1 at home. Gehre, who has been out for the past two matches, battled windy conditions against UAB's Elaine Simon to get the win 6-4, 7-5.
Freshman Augustina Serio helped the Mavs win the doubles point when she paired up with Christine Foote to defeat UAB 8-2. Serio got the momentum going for the Mavs after winning the first dual match of the day 6-0, 6-1. Serio is a team-best 11-1 this season.
"Weather conditions were tough for us today," Benitez said. "After doubles we rallied back and found some momentum in dual play which showed our fight and determination."
UTA is back in action Saturday at 11 a.m. against Texas State for its first Sun Belt match of the season. Texas State is 4-4 overall and 0-1 in conference, losing to South Alabama 6-0.
"We are looking forward to playing our first Sun Belt match," Benitez said. "It will be good to see where we stack up against Sun Belt competition and prepare us for the conference championship."
