ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington has a full schedule of matches this week beginning with a doubleheader against Xavier starting Thursday, the men will take the court at 10 a.m. followed by the women at 2 p.m.
The men began the week taking on Wichita State on Tuesday afternoon in Wichita, Kan. where they fell short, losing 4-0. The Mavericks have a 5-3 overall record, but are 1-3 on the road.
"It's going to be tough matches with the men," head coach Diego Benitez said. "Sacramento State is always a tough match, as well as Xavier. We are ready to get back on the courts and compete."
After the loss to Wichita State, UTA will look towards Carlos Arbiza and Johnathan Gonzalez in the match against the Musketeers as the duo holds a combined 8-1 mark this season in singles play.
The women have had nearly two weeks off since their last match on Feb. 22 and are ready to get back on the court. With an overall record of 6-3 and the doubles pairing of Elizabeth Thoms and Angeles de los Rios sitting No. 54 in the national rankings, the Mavs will look to bounce back in their match against Xavier after falling in their last outing against Central Florida.
"Unfortunately we haven't been able to practice that much due to last week's weather," Benitez said. "With the weather we've been limited to the amount of time we have had on the courts. So we need to make sure we come to the courts ready to go and get back into match play mode as quickly as possible."
Following the match against Xavier, the men will take on Sacramento State on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the UTA Tennis Center while the women will host No. 23 Wichita State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
Thoms and de los Rios will look to keep their streak alive in doubles play and continue to climb the national rankings while teammate and this past week's Sun Belt Player of the Week, Astrid Gehre, will take the week off to rest an abdominal injury.
"We have a few girls injured so we are working on getting them healthy as soon as possible especially for upcoming matches where we can have some good opportunities to climb up the rankings," Benitez said.
The Mavs will close the long week with a doubleheader against Texas A&M-Corpus ChristionTuesday at the UTA Tennis Center with both teams beginning play at 11 a.m.
