BSB: UTA falls 4-1 in series finale

LAFAYETTE, La. - UT Arlington received another strong pitching performance, but was unable to convert as it fell to Louisiana 4-1 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

"We pitched it well again today," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "Both Joel [Kuhnel] and Colin [Tornberg] did a really good job against a very good hitting club. To be able to hold them to 12 runs all weekend in their home park, you can't ask for more than that."

The Mavericks outhit the Ragin' Cajuns 9-7, but left six on base compared to just two for UL. Four of the six left on for UTA came in the third and fourth innings. The Mavs had nine players record a hit in the game that lasted exactly two hours, but had no multi-hit performances.

"We stumbled trying to score," Thomas said. "In the third we had two doubles and a single and we had a chance at a lot more and we got just one. Then we loaded the bases in the fourth with no outs and we had a base running mistake and we didn't score. We had a couple of chances in the third and fourth to knock their starter out and we didn't do it."

Kuhnel was charged with the loss as he gave up seven hits and four earned runs in his 6.1 innings on the hill. Kuhnel also struck out two, while walking just one in his outing. Tornberg entered the game in the seventh for the Mavericks and came away with a clean slate, allowing no hits or runs, while striking out two and walking none in his 1.2 innings of action.

The Mavericks got on the board first with a one-run third inning. Eric Tate paired his double off the left-field wall with Darien McLemore's hard-hit single to the pitcher. With one out on the board, Matt McLean delivered with an RBI double off of the right field wall to bring in McLemore. The Mavs were in position to add to their lead with one out and two runners in scoring position, but a pop up and a strikeout ending the inning with just one run.

The Ragin' Cajuns responded in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run shot over the left-field wall to take their first lead of the day.

UTA was poised to regain the lead in the fourth inning, but ultimately came up empty. Three straight singles by Levi Scott, Jackson Morris and Cody Farrell to lead off the inning loaded the bases with no outs. However, UTA came up empty as it lined into a double play and flew out to right field to end the inning.

Louisiana added to its final margin of victory with a pair of one-run innings in the fourth and sixth, highlighted by a solo shot to right field in the sixth.

The Mavericks will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Houston to take on Houston Baptist with a 3 p.m. start time.
