ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington senior Gabriela Alfonzo was named the Sun Belt Conference Co-Women's Student-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Alfonzo was the top finisher for UTA at its Gerald Richey Invitational on Saturday, posting a 5k time of 17:49.1 to place third among the field's 36 runners. She helped the Mavericks to a second-place team finish behind only SMU, the fourth-ranked team in the South Central Region.
"This is a nice honor for Gabriela," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "She is really running well right now and we can't wait to see what she has in store for the rest of the cross country season."
It is the first cross country weekly honor for Alfonzo, who has been a second-team all-SBC selection each of the previous two falls. On Apr. 22, Alfonzo was the league's female athlete of the week during the outdoor track and field season.
