ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington men and women's tennis head to the ITA Texas Regionals this weekend. The Maverick women begin play on Thursday in Waco, while the Men open their tournament on Friday in Fort Worth.
The season has seen several individuals and doubles teams capture titles and the Mavs head into the fall finales with a load of confidence.
"The ITA Regional is one of the best competitions that we will play this semester," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "It is the highlight of the fall because it is the best opportunity to start getting regional and national rankings. We have been practicing and playing all of the tournaments with the objective to be in the best shape that we can be in."
Senior Jessica Birowski is fresh off claiming the singles championship at SMU and said that the team around her is looking to build off of what they have done this far.
"I can build on what we accomplished last week," Birowski said. "It gives me confidence for this tournament and the season to come, that is one of the strengths of our team."
Birowski was one of several Mavericks to have success in the 2015 edition of the ITA Regionals and reached the Round of 16 in doubles last season
"We are a great team, we have been practicing very well," Birowski said. "There is a good dynamic going on and we want to reach the Round of 16 again, and go even further. Hard work pays off. You always have to bring your best."
The men are coming off a weekend in which they went a combined 17-5 in a round-robin format tournament at the UTSA Cup.
Mauricio Del Rio was perfect in singles to capture Flight 2, while Mario Muniesa was also perfect, losing out on a flight win due to a tiebreaker. Daniel Armengol capped the weekend off with a 3-1 record in singles and was 2-2 in doubles, playing with Del Rio.
